✅ Summary -
Your Love Is Not Good is a novel by the Korean American writer, artist, and musician Johanna Hedva that explores themes of identity, race, queer desire, and the dynamics of the contemporary art world. The novel follows a queer Korean American painter in Los Angeles who becomes obsessed with a white model named Hanne. The protagonist, who is white-passing, begins a series of paintings with Hanne as her muse, using art to get closer to her. When the paintings lead to a successful, sold-out show, the artist's reality becomes unstable as she is torn between her burgeoning success, her complex desires for Hanne, and the demands of a petition circulating in the art community that calls for a boycott of racist institutions. The book is a exploration of internal conflict, as the narrator consistently makes choices that the author personally disagrees with, in order to explore tragedy and "the muck" of identity and ambition.
